The sun (maybe), the sky and the earth--make for a beautiful backdrop to an excellent work out for every one--man and dog alike.
About Harriman State Park
Harriman is located in Rockland and Orange counties 30 miles (48 km) north of New York City. It has over 200 miles (320 km) of hiking trails and 31 lakes.

While dogs are not allowed in buildings, camping, picnic or bathing areas, they are allowed on the 200 miles of hiking trails.
OMG. According to the rules, dogs must be muzzled and on a leash not more than 6 feet. Muzzled? That's just weird. I am going to assume that that rule is not enforced except in the case of a complaint regarding an unruly dog. Not only did my dogs hike unmuzzled, but they did so off leash as well.
Remember: You must bring water for your dog unless it is a wet day. Do not count on being able to find a stream. Many of them are dry most of the year unless it has very recently rained.

People should be aware that there's TONS of ticks in Harriman St. Park, and in lots of other state parks--but Harriman in particular.
Give your dog Advantix AND also a heavy duty tick collar during the hiking trip that you can get from a vet.
There's a lot of Lyme Disease out there and ticks now can transmit the disease to dogs in a matter of minutes rather than hours (heard from my vet).
When you allow your dogs offleash when they are clearly not allowed to be offleash, not only are you violating the law (what other state laws do you choose to violate--speeding? disturbing the peace?), but you're being remarkably rude to your fellow citizens.
If you don't have the decency to follow the law, at least have the good manners to care about your fellow citizens some of whom would like to hike (by themselves or with their leashed dogs) at Harriman without worrying about your offleash dogs.
It's people like you who give dog owners a bad name. Shame.
Sigh. I never was too good at following the rules, especially silly ones.
Honestly, these kinds of rules only exist so that rangers have an actual rule to site when a dog (and owner) is behaving badly.
And what about muzzling? You don't find muzzling a dog on a hike to be a bit extreme?
It IS extreme, it's absolutely ridiculous. In the UK where I'm from, dogs are allowed off leash in almost all forests, public parks, fields etc. Are there more incidents there? Of course not! The US has the worst animal welfare record in the developed world- yet most people here seem more concerned with petty issues like taking your dog to the middle of the road to pee, or daring to think your dog might just be allowed to RUN for a few minutes. Only a tiny minority of dogs are dangerous, why do they all have to suffer? A tiny minority of men are rapists - lets insist all men are leashed and muzzled in public areas, hurrah.
